About the Artwork
This work is one of 100 pieces from the Another Time series and is identical to the 100 sculptures in Another Place, Antony Gormley’s other series. Both of the series complement one another. The pieces in Another Time have been installed throughout the world while the works of Another Place have been permanently installed at the mouth of a river in Liverpool. This series has been designed in accordance with the passage of time. This work in particular asks viewers about what space and environment the sculpture of a human form is and what being alone in space and time means.
About the Artist
Antony Gormley used his own body to mold his sculptures in the early 1980s. These sculptures were all reinventions of figurative sculpture in terms of form and purpose. They have diverse postures: some sit, some kneel, and some crouch. As there is no distinction, viewers come to concentrate on the relations between the sculptures and their surroundings rather than their details and finishings. Very much interested in the mythical and spiritual, Gormley intends for viewers to contemplate the concept of the body within space and time. He has exhibited his pieces in open outdoor spaces such as beaches, the rooftops of buildings, and even beside the expressway in order to try to showcase ordinary figure in a landscape.
